With the objective of developing deep learning in niche areas, NALSAR has set up a number of research centres. The Centres have been mandated to research on issues in their domain area, which would inform policy, strengthen teaching and where required fuel advocacy.
They have provided support to doctoral fellows researching in their area of specialisation; along with providing education and training to legal interns from different parts of the country. Senior professors specialising in the field of study have been designated as Heads of the Centres. In addition to the support received from the University the finances for the Centres come from endowments, and research projects.

The Centre was established as an initiative to trigger thought processes on the interplay between the legal order and disabilities. It is a congregation of legal minds who are especially focussing on how the power of law can be used to challenge the stereotypes and prejudices towards persons with disabilities. The members of the Centre are through the medium of writing and research, teaching and training, dialogue, discussions and consultations attempting to create an empowering legal discourse on disability rights and the full social participation of persons with disabilities. As a part of this effort to generate conversations, the Centre has often undertaken the task of initiating students into disability studies, through its strong internship programme, which is heavily subscribed by students from both within the country and outside.
Invested heavily in law and policy reform, the Centre was the legal consultant to the committee constituted to redraft Indian law on the rights of persons with disabilities, in conformity with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). It also undertook to draft India’s first country report to the UN CRPD Treaty Body.
The Centre is in active collaboration with the Centre for Disability Law and Policy, National University of Ireland, Galway and the Centre on Human Policy, Law and Disability Studies, Syracuse University. As a part of this collaboration, NALSAR hosted a policy encounter between India and Ireland on legal capacity, in January 2014.
The Centre’s website can be accessed here(link is external).
Head: Prof. Vijender Kumar
The Centre was established to facilitate greater engagement with family law concerns, especially in their practical application. It undertakes projects to address pressing policy issues like, the validity of pre-nuptial agreements, matrimonial property law, parental responsibility and the adoption of a uniform civil code. The Centre is also involved in research on effective and sensitive methods of resolving family disputes.
The Centre completed, in November 2013, a collaborative research project with the University of Western Ontario, Canada, on Non-Resident Indian Marriages: The Need for a New Legal Regime, funded by Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, New Delhi. It also organised a national workshop on the same theme, in February 2013.The Centre is, now, planning a policy initiative that addresses the problem of trafficking through marriage.
Head: Prof. Amita Dhanda
The Centre seeks to spark vital conversations around the ideology and philosophy of legal education. It does so, within the University, by organising discussions around varied subjects, ranging from Duncan Kennedy’s Legal Education and the Reproduction of Hierarchies to affirmative action and intersectionality. The NALSAR Film Festival is organised under the aegis of the Centre, in an effort to facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue amongst students from across the city, academics, film makers and activists. The Centre is presently running a three-year project on Knowledge Based Interventions to Strengthen the Realisation of Socio-Economic Rights, funded by Ford Foundation. The project shall engage with the lower judiciary, and other grievance redressal mechanisms under legislations on the right to work, education, land and housing, in order to cull out effective means of accessing rights and feed this knowledge into law school curricula, as well as share it with the stakeholders.
The larger motive behind the establishment of ‘CoEF-N’ : ‘Centre of Excellence for Economics and Finance’, is to promote ‘Investment culture’ in the country thus directly contributing to raising ‘Domestic Capital’ and in turn, its economic development.
The Centre engages the students actively through finance club activities and research projects in an effort to provide insight into application of finance and economics in business management.
